Future Students

The School of Social Work at the University of Melbourne offers programs of study for students with no prior social work qualifications and for qualified social workers who want to gain specialty or advanced specialty social work skills.  We also offer research pathways for social workers who want to commence or develop research careers.

Coursework Programs

Course Purpose
Master of Social Work For students with no social work qualifications to prepare for entry to practice as a Social Worker and become eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.  
Master of Advanced Social Work For qualified social workers to gain skills to work in advanced practice roles in one of five specilaty areas: clinical; health; human services management; mental health; child and family.

Research Programs

PhD
For students with a social work background who want to undertake a substantial piece of research which makes a significant and original contribution to the discipline.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

For students with a relevant four-year honours or masters degree who want to contribute to the advancement of social work knowledge through academic and field-work based research.


Master of Advanced
Social Work (Research)


For students who want to combine coursework with extensive independent research in social work.
