He has undertaken sessional teaching in social work at the University of Melbourne for a number of years, and commenced as a lecturer in 2008. David commenced his social work career working with people in the criminal justice system that had mental health and/or alcohol and drug issues and their families. From this early work the needs of these families became an ongoing interest for David as reflected in his current PhD research on the impact of drug use on siblings of users. The study aims to document the needs and experiences of siblings of illicit drug users, the impact (both positive and negative) of drug use on the sibling, ways of coping, use of services and supports and ideas for future information provision or service development.
His other research interests include drug self-help/mutual aid; forensic mental health; offender support and treatment; complex needs programs; and program design and evaluation.
